At Junior League of Lafayette (JLL), we believe in the power of community to uplift and empower women and children. One of our key focus areas is the health and development of women and children with our Health Essentials Resource (HER) committee at the heart of this focus area. Established during the 2022-2023 League year, HER is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of those we serve by providing essential resources.
Diaper Bank: Meeting a Critical Need
The Diaper Bank, originally launched as the Diaper Initiative in 2019, became part of HER in the 2022-2023 League year. Aligned with the National Diaper Bank Network, we recognize that one in two families struggles to provide clean diapers for their babies. This need can have far-reaching consequences, impacting parents’ ability to work and children’s opportunities for early education. At JLL, we accept diaper donations year-round through our Amazon Wishlist or directly at our Headquarters.
Our dedicated Members work tirelessly to package and distribute these diapers through local partners. Last year, we proudly provided over 111,000 diapers to families in need — one small step toward making a significant difference.
EmpowHER.: Breaking the Silence on Period Poverty
EmpowHER. is a newer initiative within JLL focused on raising awareness about period poverty — a challenge that affects many in our community. By collecting menstrual products and organizing supply drives, we strive to ensure that all girls have access to the resources they need to stay in school. In the past year, JLL distributed 58,625 period products, empowering young women to pursue their education without interruption.
Happy Wheels: Bringing Comfort to Families in Need
The Happy Wheels initiative is a testament to our commitment to supporting families during challenging times. In collaboration with the Ronald McDonald House Family Room, our Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart operates at Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Stocked with snacks, toiletries, and comforting items, the cart serves families who cannot leave their loved ones’ side. Last year, we had the privilege of serving 4,444 families by providing small comforts that can brighten difficult days.
